Counting on a Home Improvement Cost

19 Jul

Are you considering making improvements on your home? Are you itching to liven things up a little bit when it comes to the structure and décor of your home? When doing so you must consider many different things. What exactly do you want to do to your home? What is the goal of the improvements? Do you have the skills to make the changes yourself or will you need to hire professional labor? These and many others are the considerations that you must make. There is one however, that unless money grows on the trees outside of your home, you will always have to consider, that is the home improvement cost.

The home improvement cost will most often be the determining factor in whether or not the repairs get made. There are a few things you need to know about those costs before you start dusting off your hammer and paintbrush. You can do it yourself. If you want to cut down on the home improvement cost, pick jobs that you can do yourself. There will always be jobs that you can do on your own without having to pay someone $30 per hour to perform. Find a good home improvement repair book and follow the instructions. Start with smaller jobs and slowly build your handyman proficiency, and this alone can cut your home improvement cost in half, if not more.

Timing is everything. Are you looking for materials for a new deck? Try waiting until the fall instead of buying in the spring, and then as winter approaches there are less people putting in decks, which means that you can get your materials cheaper in October than you can in April. You can also wait until the holiday sales to buy and save a lot as well. Memorial Day and Labor Day are typically good times to buy home improvement materials.

Home Improvement- Remodeling on the Tube

18 Jul

It wasn’t all that many years ago that localized PBS stations were the sole broadcaster of home improvement remodeling television programs. For several seasons, a relatively small, but loyal audience would tune in to their local affiliate to watch Bob Villa instruct them in how to perform cost effective surgery on their domiciles. Now, in today’s expanded cable universe, a multitude of home improvement remodeling programming is available beyond PBS and to an even larger audience on a worldwide stage.

It’s time to take a brief overview of the top home improvement programs. PBS PBS still remains a home to a ton of these shows. “This Old House” still has a loyal following on PBS and its audience is larger than ever before due to the program’s perpetual growing popularity. It still follows its venerable formula of teaching people about home improvement remodeling, but it does so without former host Bob Villa who departed the program some years back. The popularity of “This Old House” has allowed PBS to saturate its airwaves with spin-offs designed to meet audience demand.

In addition to the spin-offs, PBS is home to a stand alone series called “Hometime” which is independent of “This Old House” and its spin-offs; although structurally, it is similar. Home Improvement 101 The popularity of these programs allowed the concept to expand beyond public broadcasting and into the realm of commercial syndication. Traditionally, the aforementioned PBS shows were produced for an older demographic.

Blending Old Objects into Contemporary Home Decor

15 Jul

Contemporary, of course, means different things at different times. When your grandmother got a tiger-oak side table for her wedding, and your mother got Fiestaware to put on her kidney shaped coffee table, they were both contemporary. But contemporary home décor now means glass, minimalism, and plenty of storage for electronics. You cannot spurn your family heirlooms; you must simply find a way to integrate great-grandmother’s Victoriana into a 21st century home.

Some small antiques blend into contemporary home décor perfectly. Glass vases, silver, and textiles designed with clean lines and classic style are easy to use. The fabrics in many old quilts, for example, tend to be more neutral from a time before very vibrant dyes were invented. Geometric patterns are the easiest to sew – perfect for contemporary home décor.

Primitive pieces are also wonderful accents in a contemporary home. An oversized, well-used dough trough is a perfect centerpiece on any large dining table. Fill it with something like sand or pebbles for a more modern look. Arrange bamboo in grandmother’s old milk churn; the contrast makes both look better.
