Finding the Best Antiques for Your Home

22 Feb

Shopping for antique furniture and accessories can be rather difficult given their high demand in the current market.  Luckily there are still many areas that can be bought from that people have not been entirely raided.  With a little knowledge and preparation anyone can find their niche to get the highest quality antiques at the best prices.

Before going on the prowl for goods one should understand what a valuable antique is and an item of no value whatsoever.  People everywhere end up paying top dollar for goods that are either faked, duplicated or simply worthless no matter what.  Items of value will always be made out of solid woods, and often be crafted out of one large piece of wood instead of glued, screwed or nailed together.  Chairs and other items that need to be more robust will often have screws or nails, but they will be hidden or incorporated in a way that adds to the style.  The designs are generally very ornate and can put them on a timeline as well.  Doing a little research on the types of designs that various pieces of furniture have had over the years will help an individual put a time frame on many different types of goods.

Picking The Right Way

There are many different effective methods of locating antique goods for great prices.  Retail stores usually sell their vintage picture frames and other various goods at top dollar.  Some shops that deal in higher volume, such as thrift stores, will usually be looking to move goods faster rather than get the most for them.  As a result they will rarely mark items worth thousands of dollars at the highest price since most people will not recognize the value and purchase it.

Four Instances to Choose Amish Furniture

18 Feb

Although it’s possible to get furniture for cheap, you often “get what you pay for” in terms of durability and craftsmanship.

One category of furniture that has stood the test of time is that made by the Amish. Most Amish pieces are handcrafted, using techniques that have been passed down through the generations.

If you’re furniture shopping and aren’t sure whether or not to choose Amish made pieces, here are four examples of instances when you might want to take the leap.

1. You’re willing to spend on quality.

When you want a beautiful piece of furniture that’s going to withstand lots of wear and tear (and look just as beautiful after heavy use as it does now), sometimes it’s smart to invest a bit more money into your table or other furniture item.
If you are looking for something that is only temporary or that you may not want or need down the line, it can be okay to spend a little bit less.

2. You want something that lasts forever.

There are times in life when we want to make purchases that will last a lifetime. Perhaps you are shopping around for an heirloom cedar chest for your daughter’s wedding present or a hand-hewn cradle for your nephew’s firstborn son. These are the instances when you want to look for something of exceptional quality.

Amish-made furniture of this type is meant to last for a lifetime (or more). It can and should be passed down through your family, being used by everyone you love along the way.

Furnishing your bedroom with modern or antique furniture

Tips For Buying Bedroom Furniture

When most people think of buying bedroom furniture they imagine spending too much time and money to get the job done and therefore, often avoid the task. However, taking a little time to plan ahead before you begin your shopping trip can actually help you avoid spending endless hours in a store and spending lots of money.

In order to save yourself frustration later, it is really important to take the time to measure the space you will be decorating. Being sure of the size can help you choose pieces that will fit your space and help you avoid having items that are either too big or too small for the area.

While every piece will have its own importance in your space, probably the most important piece to consider is what you will be sleeping on. The piece chosen must not only suit your comfort needs but, fit comfortably for the doorway. If you are not sure what types of pieces you would like to have in your room, take the time to think about what your room is used for. For example, for those who are avid readers, consideration may be needed for bookshelves to store books. For someone who loves to watch a bit of television before dozing off then space will be needed for a television and somewhere to prop that television such as a side table or stand.

Renovating wooden furniture

14 Feb

Renovating wooden furniture sounds like it may be difficult but as long as we aren’t talking about precious antique pieces, then it really isn’t.

There’s a lot of information around the web and in books and magazines about the best methods of renovating wooden furniture – but most of it boils down to the same thing; it’s all about stripping the furniture down to the original wood underneath.

But let me stress – this is for pieces you may have picked up in a cheap second-hand furniture sale where it really isn’t going to be too big a deal if you go wrong.

If you have genuine antiques, it is better to get expert advice.

Obviously, safety is the most important consideration – so take particular care with any electrical appliances like sanders, and wear eye and hand protection – and read the instructions very carefully regarding safety precautions if using paint strippers or other chemicals.

Otherwise – getting down to the wood involves sheer effort and elbow grease. You’ll need sandpaper in ever-finer grades and/or wire wool in ever-finer grains to rub away any old paint, varnish or stains.

There’s no getting around it – this is hard work, but it’s well worth the effort in getting a piece down to the original wood below.

Tips On Getting The Most Out Of Your Bedroom

Before You Shop For Bedroom Furniture

If you are thinking about new bedroom furniture, stop and think before you shop. Perhaps you are going for a completely different look. If you are keeping the same design, you may wish to make a few changes before you move in your new furnishings. Here are some things to consider as you shop for your new things.

Maybe you want a clean and fresh modern look. Many people appreciate this design with its elegance and simplicity. You may want to strip and paint the walls, and it will be better to do this before you put your new bed, dresser, and other items in the room. This will make decorating much easier. Do not forget to look into modern lighting choices also.

If you can move everything out of the room, you will have an easier time with your makeover. There is something about a blank room that screams creativity. When you face a blank room it is like looking at a blank canvas, and your imagination has a chance to run wild. You might wish to bring a sketch pad with you and write down ideas as they pop into your head.

While you have everything moved out of the room, it is the perfect time to redo the ceiling. You will not have to cover up everything in your room and worry about getting paint or other debris on them. This is also a good time to replace that old or worn out ceiling fan with something more to your taste.
