Right across most Australian suburbs, you’ll find backyards fenced in for privacy and security. Many homes make good use of colour-bond aluminium fencing to divide yards from each other. Unfortunately, the old-fashioned galvanised iron fence panels, complete with the rickety timber posts still remain in many older areas. These can seriously detract from the appeal of any landscaping effects you’re trying to achieve.

Statistics prove that the appeal of any outdoor settings, patio areas or garden areas can help to improve the value of the home. This can be an important consideration for those thinking of renovating

However, many of the newer innovations in fence panel walls can help to improve the look, feel and atmosphere of any yard easily.

Here are some tips for choosing a fence that will enhance your landscaping strategies, improve your yard security, and even help to control noise coming into and out of the yard itself.

Fence Panel Walls

Most people think carefully about their choice of outdoor furniture when creating an inviting outdoor entertaining area. They’ll think about adding a pergola or veranda to the outside of the house to provide some shelter from the sun or rain.

Yet, they don’t often think of the effect created by the fence that provides the backdrop for the entire area. Fence panel walls can be made in such a wide range of styles, shapes, textures and colours that it’s possible to create a stunning visual effect for any outdoor area.

Modern advances in fence panels have seen rust-proof aluminium construction covered with cement fibre. This gives the completed fence a more modern look and feel. The design elements also remove the need for unsightly posts or rails that can bring down the overall effect of an outdoor entertaining area.

Fence panel walls can be painted to match the exterior paint on the house or on the pergola to further complete the total outdoor decor effect.

Sound Proofing Options

As more Australian homeowners embrace the outdoor living lifestyle, backyard entertaining has come back in style in a big way. Yet, noise from guests chatting and music playing can be seen by some neighbours as a nuisance.

The same issue may be in effect the other way around – you might have noisy neighbours with kids or dogs that become a nuisance while you’re trying to sleep.

Either way, recent advances in the way fence panel walls are made can mean that it’s possible to create a level of sound proofing around your yard. This can help to control the level of noise emitting from your own backyard, but also help to limit the amount that comes in from other sources too.

Although the temperatures are falling fast and winter is approaching, this is actually the perfect time to begin thinking about your garden and how you can make sure that it will be beautiful and healthy come spring time. There are some who completely neglect their green spaces during the winter, and this could not be more harmful. In fact many of the weeds that trouble us during the spring time are busy sowing their seeds while the weather is cold, and if you don’t treat them now, you might have a much bigger problem once they start emerging. And as you will see, it’s better to kill them before they emerge than having to rely on one of the possibly damaging weed killer products.

Just Because It’s Cold, That Doesn’t Mean Your Garden Can’t Still Shine

You needn’t ever feel like your garden has to suffer because it is cold outside, in fact with a little planning you can have a year round landscape that is both pleasant to look at and reasonably easy to maintain. The key to this is to find and cultivate plants that are hardy enough to survive the temperatures in whatever region you happen to live. This will obviously vary for most, but some great plants that will be at home in most northern hemisphere climates are deciduous plants and shrubs. These are often the hardiest plants you can put in a garden, although they do need to be pruned and tended to but they will provide some much needed greenery during the winter.

Evergreens are another decent option, although they can fall victim to the lack of precipitation that often accompanies falling temperatures, and should they not get enough water they will begin to lose color, going from green to brown or yellow. Therefore you should only choose these plants in an area that is likely to get a large amount of precipitation in the form of water, that is to say areas with more mild winters.

Be Sure To Treat The Soil To Prevent Weeds Come Spring

Most people who tend to a garden will eventually have to deal with the problem of weeds intruding on their hard work. Winter is actually the perfect time to head these damaging plants off at the pass by treating the soil and making it inhospitable to them. The primary method of keeping weeds from coming out of the ground is to use what are known as pre emergent herbicides.

There are several choices when it comes to these products, and each has their own benefits and drawbacks. Most of the herbicides that you’ll find in a store are of the selective or broad spectrum types, although these are quite useful for treating any weeds that have already appeared, they do not have any effect on the early stages of weed development. The primary method of action for these pre-emergent products is the disruption of certain enzymes that are necessary for the proper germination of the seeds while they’re still in the ground. For most weed species, this once again drives home the point that treating in winter is best, as the seeds are usually found then and are waiting until after the last frost to germinate and sprout. Killing them before this happens will keep your garden completely free of intrusive species of plants and eliminate the necessity of having to buy more powerful post emergent herbicides that could potentially damage those other plants that you’ve worked so hard to cultivate.

When driving through one of the many high class neighborhoods, admiring their immaculately kept lawns, don’t you just wish you could convert your own scruffy lawn to look as divine as the one you are staring at? Doesn’t it all look awfully expensive to maintain? Do you wonder how this piece of heaven is maintained on a daily basis? Doesn’t it all look very complicated to you? Don’t you just wish you had the megabucks that those lucky residents seem to have in abundance? Well, you are not alone. The human nature does not look at what it has but wishes for what it can get. Luckily, sometimes you can get exactly what you wish for.

When it comes to reinventing your home, time does not matter. This is because; a home can be redone as many times as a person wishes and whenever they can create the time and budget for this exciting journey of discovery. The true and irreplaceable beauty of any home can only be seen by using its natural unique geography to its greatest advantage. When complemented with good old fashioned brick and motor the effect can make the home owners swoon with pure delight.

Solidifying green fences

Most people have never really considered the advantages of using concrete blocks for their perimeter fences. This is because; concrete is seen in terms of industrial building products. In recent times, people have turned to these solid blocks for their perimeter fencing. Unlike green fences which require lots of maintenance by way of pruning and shaping, stone walls once erected, have very low maintenance. The added security is an essential bonus that comes with these walls.

Rock-hard walls are also everlasting. This means that their lifespan is endless unless they are demolished. This feature can add to the market value of any domestic residence or commercial premises when the time comes for a real estate upgrade. The fact that they are also affordable and dependable makes them an excellent return on investment capital.

Adding height and depth to the yard

Nobody wants a flat yard with the usual flower arrangements with utterly no character in it. When a lifeless, colorless yard needs a facelift and some life added to it, using retaining walls can do wonders to this overall effect. This is because; these walls can be made to different height specifications and then filled in with garden soil. Layering flat yards into different levels using these modular walls can give it the appearance of added space and new charm. They can also be colored to suit the owners special color palate. This gives the home owners the opportunity to splash their desired mix of exotic and indigenous flowers and plants to make the garden their own unforgettable personal paradise.

Waiting to exhale

The natural human fear for change makes many home owners fear. Most of them also do not have the patience to watch their homes develop into the stuff they dream about. Changing the mind set and thinking long term in terms of home improvement is the only way to go when it comes to transforming an ordinary home into a work of art. The main question to ask oneself is, “what will it take for me to life in a home that I only see on catalogue pages?” This dream can be nearer than you imagine.

Janice Biltmore is an exterior home design specialist. She aims to create the dream homes that exist only in people’s fantasies. She brings these dreams to solid reality by using an ingenious combination of beautifully scalped concrete blocks and modular sturdy retaining walls to bring out the best of each home’s unique contours and corners.

Does Autumn and Winter make you feel cooped up and frustrated that you can’t get out and garden? Well the upside is that this is the perfect time to dream up enhancements for your yard. The Internet is loaded with clever ideas to help you create your own outdoor haven, and there are tons of books and magazines on the subject as well. But before you get to sifting through seed catalogs take a moment to define your own personal vision.

What kind of statement would you like to make? Does refined elegance trip your trigger? Or is shabby chic more your style? With a little bit of forethought you can create a mystical fairy world that entices birds and butterflies, or make a fun hangout for barbecues and games. There should be no limit to your imagination because with the slightest bit of ingenuity many ideas can be implemented while staying within budget. Looking for a slightly surreal “Alice in Wonderland” vibe? Look for some discarded old glass doors and hang them strategically throughout your yard. And don’t forget to create little pockets of quiet in and around your yard, whether with a trellis to conceal a stolen kiss or a well-placed hammock to invite an afternoon snooze; this is your vision so have fun with it.

Don’t forget the importance of color. Plays on color greatly affect the feel of a space; they also act as attractors to butterflies and bees. Butterflies are particularly fond of red and purple flowers so feel free to incorporate these colors throughout your yard. And don’t forget you can use well-placed contrasting colors in the form of chairs, benches or planters as well. Skip what magazines call the latest trends and instead utilize colors that make you feel good.

Stop and smell the roses.

Certain smells can be evocative memory triggers. Do you love the smell of night blooming jasmine or honeysuckle? Create little nooks and trellises throughout your yard so that a moonlit walk offers lovely surprises with every turn. Though be careful with placement so that you aren’t constantly inundated by the more powerful scents; consider placing them toward the back of your yard instead.

But more important than anything, have fun when envisioning your dream yard and don’t hesitate to get friends on board to help make your dreams a reality. And soon, your yard will be the social hub or quiet retreat you’ve always hoped for.

A greenhouse is a magical place that comes alive in the spring. The better the space in a greenhouse is utilized, the more flowers and food it may offer through the season. Whether your greenhouse is a small hobby greenhouse or industrial size, chances are there is wasted space inside. Adjustable racking and shelving systems are a convenient way to apply some basic principles of organization.

Height

Greenhouse tables only utilize the bottom half of the greenhouse walls, and often the space both above and underneath the tables remains unused. This results in usable space along the inside of the greenhouse walls going to waste.

Greenhouse gardeners may replace these short and inefficient tables with portable racking and shelving systems in order to store plants from the bottom to the very top of the greenhouse walls. This means they will have space to start and grow more plants during the course of the season.

Adjustable Plant Storage

One of the nicest things about racking and shelving systems is that they are easily adjusted as the season continues. For example, early in the growing season you may want to utilize as much space as possible for starting seeds in trays. As the seed starting trays are not tall, you will have room for more shelves up along the greenhouse wall. You may wish to remove a shelf or rack as the season progresses to make room for the plants grow taller. Many shelving systems are lightweight and easy to adjust.

Lightweight and Portable

Many shelving systems are available on wheels. This makes them easy to move around a larger greenhouse, or in and out of a smaller greenhouse. Many are lightweight. This makes it easy to experiment by moving them around in the greenhouse to develop the best arrangement.

Just like greenhouse tables, racking and shelving systems are available with holes for drainage. Excess water will not sit and create problems, such as mosquitoes, in a greenhouse with shelving and adjustable racks. Because they are portable and adjustable, they are also easy to clean and easy to store. You may choose to leave them in the greenhouse over the winter, or take them apart and store elsewhere.

These easy to use systems are an efficient way to maximize space in the greenhouse throughout the entire growing season. Smart greenhouse gardeners want to get as much use, flowers and food out of their greenhouse as possible during the growing season. Installing portable shelving along the greenhouse walls is an incredibly good idea.

I’m a keen gardener and love growing vegetables in my greenhouse. Recently I installed a racking and shelving system in mine which really helped me maximise my space and allows me to be more organised and grow more veg! I hope this article can give you some helpful tips as well.
