Plumbing is one of the many aspects of a house that require regular maintenance. In the course of your periodic plumbing check you may come across different types of problems. Fixing such issues in early stages can prevent major breakdowns and associated repair expenses. Certain problems require expert plumbing services, but a number of small issues that can be fixed on one’s own. Here are some of the most common plumbing issues and their solutions.
Leaking Pipes
Everyone faces this plumbing problem at some or the other point. The good news is that you can repair small leaks on your own. The signs of a leaking pipe include the sound of running water even when all the faucets are turned off and a higher water bill. You can confirm the leak by tightly closing all fixtures and checking the water meter. If the dial of the meter is moving in spite of all faucets being turned off, you are losing water from somewhere.
Before you fix the leak, you need to locate it. If you can hear the sound of flowing water, you can follow it to pinpoint the source. Stained or dripping roof indicates leak directly above it. Wall water stains indicate presence of leak above them. Once you find the leak, changing the pipe in question is the best option. Make sure that you turn off water supply before doing this. If you do not have much experience, it is advisable to avail expert plumbing services. A small leak can also be stopped using a clamp and a solid rubber blanket.
Clogged Drain
Unclogging drains is one of the most unpleasant, but necessary plumbing task. In such cases, chemical drain cleaners and plungers should be your first line of action. If these are ineffective, the trap will have to be cleaned with a snake. If you are unable to reach the blockage, it may be located deeper in the main drain. You may need professional help to clear a deep clog.
Frozen Pipes
If a faucet stops yielding water during winter, frozen pipe may be the reason. Hair dryer, propane torch, boiling water or heating pad can be used to thaw such pipes. Freezing of pipes should be avoided as it puts them at risk of busting. Simple measures like insulating all pipes, keeping a small trickle of water running from fixtures, placing a small heater or lamp near exposed pipes and keeping doors between unheated and heated rooms ajar can help. Un-insulated pipes should be covered with foam, heating wires, newspaper or insulating adhesive tape.
