Some beginning gardeners believe that you must plant in the spring and pick in the summer. Basically, they believe that gardens are only for warm weather. However, nothing could be further from the truth. With a little bit of practical advice, you can be a gardener year-round and won’t have to put your hobby on the shelf simply because the weather is chilly.

Before you think about all-weather gardening, the first thing you need to learn about is the particular climate you live in and how some varieties of plants will act in that climate. For example, if you live in Texas, Florida or California, you can obviously grow different plants during the winter than if you live in Massachusetts, Maine or Michigan. Figure out your climate and what can grow where you live.

A lot of shrubbery and plants of the ornamental nature are evergreen. Others are simply able to grow in colder weather. So while you might not be able to grow green beans and Roma tomatoes in the winter, you can still have a very good-looking garden if you take the time. The odds are just good that it won’t be a vegetable garden; it will be a decorative garden. Ornamental trees and shrubs are great additions to any decorative garden.

Unless you live in an area with bitterly cold winters where the temperate drops snap the needles off of evergreen trees, you should be able to grow a wide assortment of berries, such as raspberries, blueberries and other winterberries. These plants are relatively low-maintenance and won’t require much care once they begin to grow. Beyond trimming them up, all you’ll have to do is sit back and enjoy the view.

The following is most definitely an aesthetic tip and not really anything to do with growing actual healthier or more attractive plants. It’s no secret that you’re going to have less foliage in the winter months. Fewer varieties of plants are going to bloom. And you’ll subsequently be left with far less color throughout the garden. But by using some really colorful containers for your plants, you can keep things looking as bright and as lively as possible without having to rely on plants. You can take an old wine barrel, for example, and paint it up. You can have that old rustic look and a splash of color.

In terms of creating a decorative, attractive garden, you won’t always have to lean on your plants and your planters. You can create a whole scene. Like some people like to build outdoor kitchens, ponds, gazebos, and other yard attractions, you can do the same thing with your garden. You could get some colorful furniture, some yard ornaments, and arrange everything to really bring the focus in on your garden.

Most people do live in areas where the winter prohibits growing a wide variety of plants. But if you can follow some of the tips listed above, you will be able to create an attractive garden no matter the weather situation.

Gardening is a great way to improve your health and the health of the environment. This article will focus on just a few of the reasons why spending a few hours a week growing crops outside increases the vitality of your body and your yard. Get motivated to start your garden this year so you too can gain from the rewarding hobby of gardening.

Gardening for yourself means you have total control of what goes into the earth. Using organic fertilizers like household compost is a safe, effective, and cheap way to improve your garden. Gardening without synthetic chemical additives will save money and improve the long-term quality of the soil. Synthetic fertilizers are like steroids for plants. They promote fast growth, but don’t actually enrich the ground. Industrial farms use millions of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers that end up in fresh water sources. Organic and safe materials can be composted and added to soil for long term improvement and short term results. Plus there is no chance of harsh and toxic additives running into the sources of our drinking water like the water table, rivers and lakes, and sewers.

Gardening in an environmentally friendly way is as healthy for you as it is for the planet. When you eat food that you’ve grown, you will not have to eat any of the chemicals or genetically modified organisms that are completely unavoidable in the supermarket produce aisles. You will be consuming fresher and more densely nutritious foods than you can get at the grocery store.

Another reason to start a garden plot is bio-diversity and ecosystem stability. By nurturing a small crop plot in your yard, you will foster the habitats of beneficial insects and birds. Pests thrive in poor soils because the checks and balances provided by nature are out of whack. The crops themselves will have weakened defenses, and there will not be be enough natural predators to combat the pests. Caring for your garden will attract a beneficial mix of all kinds of life that will help with your hobby. Worms are another example. If you take steps to improve your soil, then worms will notice. They will come to your plot and help your crops by aerating the soil, breaking down matter into nutrients plants can use, and fertilizing the soil with their manure. When you put time into enhancing the health of your yard nature notices and helps out as well.

Don’t forget that your garden is a healthy hobby that allows you to relax outside and spend quality time with friends and family. Gardening can be a very thrifty stress reliever that even doubles as a moderate exercise routine and a soothing social event. The tangible, visible, and edible rewards of a healthy garden make it an even more fulfilling pastime.

If you’re looking for a healthy and economical pastime, then look no further than gardening. This article was written to inspire you to go ahead and get started on your own garden this year. Whether you do it for your own health or the health of your yard, get outside and start reaping the benefits of gardening.

Gardening is relaxing and a whole lot of fun, but it also has its annoyances. Little problems can make your garden feel less like a source of entertainment and more like a headache. This article is designed to eliminate some of the stresses of gardening, and improve your gardening skills in the process. Check out our five easy tips!

1. If you grow herbs, you may have struggled with the fact that they don’t dry quickly enough after you pick them. Luckily, there’s a simple solution! Take a few sheets of newspaper and spread them across the backseat of your car. Then, place the herbs on the newspaper. Close your car’s doors and windows, and let them sit. They’ll be dried out and ready to use in no time!

2. When you’re organizing a garden, in can be tricky to keep track of what’s been planted where. To mark your plants before they begin to sprout, place a stone near the place you’ve planted something. Use a permanent marker to label what you’ve planted there. You’ll be able to figure out what’s where with a single glance. Smooth, flat stones are idea for this.

3. Many people organize their gardens with twine. It can be very helpful, but unfortunately, the twine can also get lost. To keep your twine safe, place it inside a clay pot. Pull the twine out through the pot’s drainage hole, and leave the unused twine in the pot. Turn the pot upside down, and voila! You won’t have to worry about your twine getting away from you any time soon.

4. An important part of a good garden is a good-looking lawn, and string trimmers are a great way to achieve them. However, string trimmers also have a downside: they easily jam. Thankfully, there’s a quick fix. Place a small amount of vegetable oil in a spray bottle and give your string trimmer a spritz every now and then. It’ll keep it in great condition, and you won’t have to worry about jams. For added convenience, you can also purchase vegetable oil that’s already in a spray bottle.

5. Clay pots are great to use in a garden, but it isn’t always easy to get rid of the salt deposits inside them. However, there’s a concoction that can get rid of them quickly and easily. Mix together a little bit of water, white vinegar, and rubbing alcohol and use the concoction to clean up your pot. Simply spray a little inside the pot, and scrub thoroughly. Soon, it’ll be salt deposit free. If you’re concerned about salt deposits building up again, give your pots a good cleaning with this mixture every 6 months.

Don’t let the frustrations of gardening ruin your fun! Instead, find a way you can work around them. Utilize all of the tips in this article, and you’ll be able to grow a beautiful garden without stressing yourself out. Instead of constantly fixing your garden’s problems, you’ll be able to sit back and properly enjoy it.

Most nurseries and home improvement centers offer bags of mulch and other soil nutrients to increase your soil’s quality and help you grow more healthy plants. However, you only need to spend money on these if you are looking to save time. There are several ways you can enhance the quality of your soil and grow a beautiful garden without needing to spend large amounts of money. Read on for some different methods you can easily do on your own.

1. Make a compost for your soil with your yard clippings and kitchen leftovers. Do you drink coffee every day? Coffee grounds are an excellent way to increase the acidity of your soil. Eat a lot of fresh veggies and fruit? The peels, rinds and other left-overs make a great compost to mix in to the soil. The next time you trim your shrubs, trees and flowers, chop all of the clippings into small chunks and spread them over your soil beds as if they were wood chips, so they can add extra nutrients to the soil as they decompose.

2. Practice “lasagne” gardening. This clever idea is great to start while you are concurrently de-cluttering your home. Lasagne gardening involves putting down different materials, layer by layer, soaking them with water and letting them compost over time. This method is easy, a great way to recycle, and it works very well. Grab anything you have — old leaves, thick cardboard, layers of newspaper, grass clippings or straw.

Materials decompose best when you alternate layers of living, green material (nitrogen) with layers of brown, dry material (carbon) to balance the levels of moisture and aeration. Layer in old school papers, manure, seaweed, weeds, old wool or cotton clothing, mushy kitchen leftovers….just keep piling on anything that is biodegradable. The pile starts out high, and the earthworms and microbes help it shrink down over time. Plant seedlings on the top by digging small holes and adding some dirt. By the time the roots grow, the plants will be receiving much nourishment from the decomposing layers of “stuff.”

3. When your soil is very poor, use straw bale gardening. The whole tied-up straw bale is the garden, so you do not have to worry about your soil at all. Place these alongside paths, on a balcony or anywhere else that strikes your fancy. Some bales made with oats, rye or barley remain as straw, while hay has seeds and grows grass. You may desire this look, but will probably want to keep it trimmed. They only cost a few dollars each. Water them thoroughly once you get them home, and let them sit for two to three weeks in the sun. Layer the top with a compost fertilizer, such as coffee grounds, chicken manure or bone meal before planting. Each bale can handle about three zucchini or squash plants, 12 to 15 pea or bean plants or anything else you can dream up. Keep the hay well-watered.

4. Plant “cover crop” plants for the season to cover and protect your bare soil from winter freezes, weed growth, erosion and nutrient leaching. Once the plants die out, incorporate them into the soil and let them compost for a bit before you add your new plants. Some cover crops are also used to attract insects that are good for your garden, and plants such as clover or field peas can add beneficial nitrogen to the soil for your next round of plants.

The bulk of the soil improvements for gardens are typically done before the first seed is ever planted. The methods above require very little money, allowing you to spend a little extra on additional plants or seeds to successfully grow and enjoy your own fantastic garden.

One of the most important things we can do for future generations is going green now. Small steps in different areas will eventually result in a substantially lowered use of resources. The following tips will give you some ideas on how to go green in a practical way.

Many of us leave our car running in many circumstances when we could shut it off. Sometimes you could be stuck in traffic and even if it is cool outside, people will have their cars running. Remember when your car’s engine is running, you are burning gas even if your car is stationary.

There is not a good reason to leave your computer or laptop turned on all the time. When you stop using your computer for the day, just turn it off. You will save energy and money on your electric bill too. One other reason to do this is a number of experts believe leaving your computer on all the time may be harmful to the unit.

If you can not invest in your own green technology, such as solar energy, there is another option. Many utility companies have programs to purchase green energy from them. This is known as the green energy voluntary market programs. Check with your local utility to obtain more information.

It is hard to believe, but raising the thermostat of your air conditioning unit two degrees during the summer will save plenty of energy. The same goes for lowering it two degrees in the winter.

Washing your laundry with cold water is one suggestion most people rarely think of. When you use hot or warm water it comes from your water heater, which needs to start using energy to heat more water afterwards. Unless you have a solar water heater, this is another needless waste of energy.

It is amazing most people do not pay their bills online. It is a simple, convenient way to pay your bills. If you have not switched to paying your bills online, think of all the energy that will be saved. There is no gas being used for transport and less trees being cut down for paper usage.

Every day millions of pieces of junk mail are mailed out. The majority of these pieces of mail end up in the garbage. That is a lot of wasted energy. You can do your part by registering with the Direct Marketing Association to be excluded from junk mailings.

When choosing which appliances to purchase, go for energy efficient ones. Energy efficient appliances do not cost much more than regular ones. Even if the particular unit you like turns out to be a bit more than the regular one, it will more than pay for itself through energy savings.

When you take steps to implement some of these suggestions, you will realize it is not a difficult transition to lead a green lifestyle. With all the different ways we can contribute to energy conservation, there are not many reasons to avoid going green. Remember when you go green, the amount of green in your pocket will also increase.
