Go to any home design blog or site, look in any decorating magazine, and you’re sure to see the new home painting trend: stripes and lines! Right now, horizontal, and especially vertical lines on walls are very popular. These stripes can be thick or thin, horizontal or vertical (or even diagonal!), really anything goes with today’s painted stripes. There are also popular designs with argyle, chevron, triangles, etc etc. It seems like everyone wants these different geographical designs in their homes. And with good reason! These stripes and designs add an unexpected depth and excitement to any room. And they really are quite simple to do.
Want to be the first in your neighborhood to get this new trend in your home, but not quite sure exactly where to do it or what type of combination to use? Just read on! There are a lot of fun things to do with these different designs, even with just the plain straight lines.
Here are some ideas of some rooms you can use this trend in, and some combinations that will look great.

Combinations:
1. Shine on matte
Choose one color that you really like, and then buy that same color in a matte and a shine finish. Paint your entire wall in the matte finish. Then do thick vertical stripes on top of it in the shine finish. This is an extremely classy and unique way to do the stripe-trend.
2. Black & white
Paint the room in black and white stripes. This would look great in any type of stripes you can think of: horizontal or vertical, super thick or extremely thin. Then, decorate the room with pops of a bright color in lamps and pillows. This bold choice gives a fun twist to such classic and timeless colors. This would look great in a teenager’s room. This also works great with teenagers’ ever-changing minds. When you decorate their room their favorite color is hot pink. But a year later they decide they can’t stand the thought of a hot-pink room anymore, all you have to do is switch out the lamps and pillows! (using their allowance money, of course).
3. Different shades of the same color
You’ve picked your favorite color that you want to paint a room, but now you can’t decide which exact shade you want to go with. Well, pick two (or even three)! Think of a light gray and a charcoal in your home office. Or a baby blue and navy blue in your baby’s nursery. Or a plum and lilac in the twin girls’ room. Choosing different shades of the same color is a subtle but very classy way to do this trend.
4. Primary colors
How fun would it be to do horizontal stripes in your child’s play room of blue, red, yellow, and green? Or take it even further and add yellow, orange, and purple and do a whole rainbow-themed room or wall! These bright and bold colors could be a bit overwhelming, so it would be best to do large stripes, and/or choose just one wall to do this on. What a great way to inspire fun and creativity for your little one!
5. Contrasting or complimentary colors
Think of how bold an artist’s studio would look with purple and mustard-yellow chevron stripes.
6. A pastel color with a neutral color
Baby rooms look great with any light neutral color (like a tan, beige, very light yellow, even a plain white) with another color pastel stripes on top. If you’re really comfortable with your painting skills, try painting your walls in a tan or beige, and then do baby blue and sea green or pale pink and lilac argyle on the walls. A large argyle strip around the room would also be great and very different!
7. Accent wall
Not quite ready to commit to a whole room in stripes, or don’t have the time or patience to deal with painting a whole room in stripes? Try an accent wall! Accent walls are another big trend right now, and they are extremely easy to do. Any of the color combinations above work great with an accent wall. Just pick the wall that you most want to stand out in the room, and paint that with the more bold of the two colors you’re choosing.
