As your family grows, your tastes change and decorating style evolve, you may want to update your home. A few simple tips can make your home more comfortable and up to date. You may also be able to increase the size of your home. This helps you accommodate a growing family without having to move. Consider the following options before deciding to leave your current home.

Old carpet and outdated linoleum can get stained and make your home look older than it really is. Consider replacing your carpet and replacing linoleum with hardwood or wood laminate flooring. If anyone in your home has allergies or you live in a particularly hot climate, you might consider getting rid of your carpet all together in favor of laminate or tile. Look for flooring options that are low maintenance and have a chance of remaining in style for at least 10 years.

One recent trend in decorating includes painting each room of your home a different color. This is perfect for bedrooms where children can show their own personalities through the color of their rooms. Accent walls are also popular right now. You can experiment with paint because it is fairly simple and inexpensive to change paint color.

In the eighties, most homes were build with brass fixtures. The decorating trend has changed so that most fixtures are now brushed nickel. Changes the metal fixtures throughout your home is a fairly simple process. When changing the fixture attached to the sinks in your bathroom and kitchen, make sure to turn off your water. You can use metal paint to change the brass accents in your bathroom as well.

As your family grows, you may need to consider an addition to your home. If you are adding on a game room, entertainment room or office, add a closet so that it will be considered a bedroom. This will add value to your home when you are ready to sell. If you have unused space in your home, it would be less expensive to finish that space as opposed to adding on. An attic or basement is the perfect space to make improvements.

If you have a galley kitchen, consider reconfiguring that space. Galley kitchens have been replaced in popularity by open kitchens that are part of a great room. Before knocking down walls, make sure that they are not weight-bearing walls. You may need to get the advice of a licensed contractor for this type of job. An electrician may also be required to reroute electrical wiring. A great room normally includes an open kitchen, an eating area and a living room.

Some of these changes are do-it-yourself projects while other may require the help of a licensed contractor. Find out if you need to get permits from the city before making addition or making changes to the exterior of your home. If you have a Home Owner’s Association, check with them before making any major changes, including changing the color of your home.
