Aaah, spring. It’s that time of year when we emerge from a long winter feeling refreshed, renewed and energized. What better time of year to inject a little of that spirit of renewal into our home as well?

Unfortunately, full-scale renovation simply doesn’t fit into most of our budgets. Don’t fret. There are a number of simple projects you can complete that can have a huge impact without breaking the bank.

If you have even one day or a weekend to devote, read on for some ideas that just might inspire you in your own home.

Fireplace Mantel

Do an online search and you will come up with literally thousands of ideas for updating an old, out-of-style fireplace mantel. If you are working with wood, a simple coat of paint can be a major overhaul. Other surfaces to consider that are suitable for the do-it-yourselfer include: tile (have you seen the beautiful glass tile options out there?), faux stone and reclaimed lumber. Consider paring down the knick-knacks and décor that reside on top of your mantel as well. A few well-placed pieces you love will make a far greater statement.

Photo Walls

A great place to get inspiration for a well-designed photo wall is Pinterest. Mix and match frames in colors that complement your room, add small artwork into the mix, and consider changing your photos to a black-and-white or sepia scheme. Whatever you decide, before you hang anything, lay your design out in its entirety on the floor and measure, measure, measure. It is even a good idea to plot your design onto large-scale paper and place that against the wall to mark where you will need to nail holes.

Paint Fixtures

Have you seen the exceptional spray paint colors on the market today? If you have a couple of hours and a can of paint, you can literally change the entire look of a small room like a bathroom by painting fixtures like the towel rod, toilet tissue holder, and cabinet hardware. Simply unscrew them, take them to a well-ventilated area, and spray in long, even strokes. Spray in light coats letting the items dry completely in between. You will find updated options like oil-rubbed bronze and brushed nickel that will make visitors think you have replaced all of your fixtures (for about $4.99!)

New Window Treatments

Changing the style of your window treatments can change the entire look of your room. Shift gears entirely…if you currently have outdated curtains, try some of the newer, clean, sleek Roman Shade options. If you have always had wooden blinds, add dramatic impact with floor-length panels hung about 18 inches above the window cases to elongate your window. If you can sew, your options are seemingly endless. Visit your local fabric store to find a fabulous fabric from which to sew new valances or to upholster a unique cornice.

Spring renewal is much more than spring cleaning, and it doesn’t take a big budget to make a huge difference in the look of your room!
