Although the temperatures are falling fast and winter is approaching, this is actually the perfect time to begin thinking about your garden and how you can make sure that it will be beautiful and healthy come spring time. There are some who completely neglect their green spaces during the winter, and this could not be more harmful. In fact many of the weeds that trouble us during the spring time are busy sowing their seeds while the weather is cold, and if you don’t treat them now, you might have a much bigger problem once they start emerging. And as you will see, it’s better to kill them before they emerge than having to rely on one of the possibly damaging weed killer products.
Just Because It’s Cold, That Doesn’t Mean Your Garden Can’t Still Shine
You needn’t ever feel like your garden has to suffer because it is cold outside, in fact with a little planning you can have a year round landscape that is both pleasant to look at and reasonably easy to maintain. The key to this is to find and cultivate plants that are hardy enough to survive the temperatures in whatever region you happen to live. This will obviously vary for most, but some great plants that will be at home in most northern hemisphere climates are deciduous plants and shrubs. These are often the hardiest plants you can put in a garden, although they do need to be pruned and tended to but they will provide some much needed greenery during the winter.
Evergreens are another decent option, although they can fall victim to the lack of precipitation that often accompanies falling temperatures, and should they not get enough water they will begin to lose color, going from green to brown or yellow. Therefore you should only choose these plants in an area that is likely to get a large amount of precipitation in the form of water, that is to say areas with more mild winters.
