Even though many people do not believe how much difference a few small modifications to your home can make when it comes to your energy costs, but it is true. There are a few specific things that you can do to your home that will save you a great deal of money over the years. If you want to know what you need to do to save money on your home energy costs, continue reading this article.

One thing that many people forget to do is change their furnace filters on a regular basis. A lot of people know they have to change the filter that works to bring in air to the furnace but are not aware that there are also filters at different points of the air flow in the home. Make sure that all of your furnace filters are clean so that the furnace does not have to use more power than necessary to adequately heat or cool your home. This is more expensive than buying new filters. Some filters can even just be cleaned and replaced once they are dry, which can also save you a lot of money in just a few years.

A very cheap way to keep the heat or air conditioning in your home and the outside weather out is by using weather stripping and caulk. One of the biggest culprits when it comes to letting the outside air in are your doors. Putting a high quality weatherstrip around your door from the inside can do a lot to keep out the hot or cold weather, which will save you a great deal on your energy costs. You should also look around your home to find other areas that could be letting in air from the outside.

Common areas include windows and various places that pipes may enter your home. If the cracks are rather small, you can use caulk to seal them off. Oftentimes you can just put your hand around window sills to check for air leaks. If you feel any air coming in, you should just apply the caulk to the entirety of the window, as once you close off one gap the air will try to find a new place to enter.

If you pay for your water, you know how quickly water costs have gone up in recent years. There are, however, many things that you can do to save on your water expenses. There are toilets that use one third of the water that traditional toilets use, which adds up very quickly. Another water saving device is a low flow shower head. Some people assume that low flow means that it lacks water pressure, but that is not the case thanks to the advancement of technology geared towards energy conservation.

As you have seen after reading this article, making your home energy efficient is easier and more convenient than ever before. If you want to save money and help the environment at the same time, put the tips in this article to use.
