Many home improvement projects focus on the inside of your home, but what about the outside? The exterior of your home, including the landscaping should be just as appealing as the inside. Don’t let your home fall flat on such a competitive real estate market! The tips in the article below will help you become the envy of your neighborhood or help you get the house sold quickly.

The first question one must repeatedly ask about an outdoor project is: will the value of your home increase after the project? This is the most important question, especially if you are looking to sell in the near future. Many projects beautify a home, but fail to provide a proper return on your money when you look to sell.

Everyone’s neighborhood is different, but one thing is for certain, all neighborhoods have a theme. This is mostly true for higher end neighborhoods, but make sure that the design and landscaping improvements you are doing for the exterior of your home match your neighborhood. If you have a home owner’s association or HOA, the more important this is. Look around the types of improvements your neighbors have done, and try to match theirs.

As was mentioned before, if your neighborhood is a bit more upscale and there is a Home Owner’s Association, make sure that you research which types of projects are allowed and which ones aren’t. Some HOAs are very strict, whereas some are just there as an organized guiding tool.

You probably want to live in your house for a while, but it is important to think of the future ahead. At some point in time, you may look to sell your home. It is very important that you are still able to sell it with the designs and changes you have made. The new projects you intend to undertake should not be entirely based on your personality. Don’t design something that only you can appreciate. If you look to sell your home, it should also appeal to the masses.

Especially true with landscaping or gardening projects, make sure that you have the time on your hands to maintain it. Gardens need to be taken care of during winter months, the grass needs to be mowed, plants need to be watered and weeds need to be destroyed. These are all things that you need to keep in mind when looking for the next project of your choosing. Decks and patios need to be weatherproofed and checked for termite damage constantly, especially if it is made from untreated wood.

Is the project you are going to do functional at all? Some projects like adding a small swimming pool or a jacuzzi that takes up more space than it should, may just be doing that- taking up space. The exterior of your home should relate to your lifestyle. If you enjoy having friends over or hosting parties, install a functional deck for barbecue parties or a canopy to host garden parties.

If you can honestly say that you have read this article and the project you had in mind fits the bill, go ahead and get started! Remember to take your time and choose the project that’s right for you and your home.
